Have you Heard of Oil Pulling?

posted in: health | 0

Oil pulling is an old Ayurvedic method of reducing the harmful bacteria in your mouth and promoting good oral health. How do you “pull oil?” Take a tablespoon of unrefined coconut oil (sesame oil can also be used ) and swish it around your mouth and in between your teeth, for 15 to 20 minutes. Spit it out into a napkin or the garbage, not into your sink – you don’t want to clog any drains. Ideally, it is supposed to be done on an empty stomach and you should rinse with water, brush your teeth and scrape your tongue afterward.

Ayurvedic teachings believe that each area of the tongue corresponds to the internal organs. Some believe you can self-diagnose problems in your body by examining the tongue. This is why they recommend scraping the tongue as opposed to brushing it.

Oil Pulling Produces Better Oral Health

Some of those who have tried oil pulling report better oral health. Visits to the dentist show much less plaque buildup and tooth decay, less bleeding gums, no bad breath and no more chapped lips. Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is a good fat that has anti-fungal, antiviral and anti-bacterial properties which is why coconut oil is better to use than sesame or any other type of oil. Modern-day oil pullers add essential oils to the coconut oil to help with other areas of their health. Although pulling oil is supposed to get rid of toxins in your body, it is not a substitute for flossing and brushing.
